Why
Linguist Nation?

 

In 2019, the founders of Linguist Nation, children of deaf adults (CODAs) and sign language interpreters, began this journey by acknowleding a need facing the freelance interpreter community...plenty of advice existed on how to excel at interpreting but not much guidance on how to make a living as an interpreter.

The founders observed many linguists who were passionate about their work, but who lacked the expertise in the business aspects of the industry and relied on intermediaries to post jobs, determine rates and manage workloads--frequently to the interpreter's detriment.  They sought to change that.

As a result, the goal became straightforward; to make it easier​ for language people like them to advance their careers and pay, leveraging modern technology and smart strategies.  The founders wanted more than to just keep interpreters afloat; but to see them thrive, and to make sure interpreters could be recognized and paid in keeping with their hard work.

​

From the founders' perspective, a huge language industry was heavily resourced but not much for the average interpreter.  Countless hours and a lot of hard work initially created an interactive web-based toolkit of products and services to help interpreters advance, prosper and thrive--that effort evolved into Linguist Nation, a full-blown digital effort which allows linguists to collaborate with each other and showcase their skills while still independently managing their own job books, negotiating fair rates, effortlessly managing calendars and seamlessly invoicing.

Along with this effort, the founders recognized how valuable Linguist Nation can be to all linguists--interpreters, translators, communication access real time (CART) translators, those proficient in Braille, Tactile and Protactile, and more!
